Originally from South Carolina and more recently based in Nashville, Tennessee, Kyshona Armstrong is a roots musician who fuses together influences from Blues through Gospel to Soul with a little country for good measure (how could you escape that when Nashville is your base?). This episode came about through a fair few degrees of separation as my wife used to work with Kyshona's cousin who told us of the upcoming tour via another mutual friend in the US. I'm glad it all worked out as she's a serious talent!
It's also the first anniversary of The Proc-Cast and as a bit of a celebration, there are three episodes coming up, including this one, which feature amazing musicians all the way from Nashville. Kyshona is the first of the three, who all recently toured the UK together selling out venues all over. The other ladies are Sarah Darling and Jenn Bostic who you'll see and hear more from over the coming weeks.
Joining me on the show this week is Amanda Richards of Amanda Richards & The Good Long Whiles. I came across Amanda online when scouring the internet for new bands. The first thing that I heard was their upcoming single 'Fresh Kill' which hooked me in and made me approach Amanda about a spot on the show. When we spoke, it was quite clear from the conversation that Amanda came at music from a verbal direction, the songs are a vessel to transport her poetry and writings about past lovers and rising above the devils temptations to a captivated audience.
For me personally, I've never been one for the use of the written word, so musically it was interesting to hear about someone coming at music from a totally different direction. Owing to the distance, it wasn't possible to produce live tracks for this episode, however there are three tracks on this episode that you won't hear anywhere else. Have a listen, enjoy and go support a great artist! You can see Amanda's submission to the NPR tiny desk concert competition below for a preview!
