An interview recorded in the back of a mid-90s Toyota Previa, now that's Rock'n'Roll. (Also an excuse for poor interview sound quality, but that's beside the point.) I went out to see Vodun on the first night of their UK tour with previous Proc-Cast guests Limb at The Washington in Sheffield and had a en excellent time listening to and speaking with both bands. Understandably disappointed that factors beyond their control meant they couldn't stop in Nottingham for a veggie burger at Annie's Burger Shack, Chantal, Linz and Zel were troopers and gave me a good interview despite missing out.
They are a band that fuse together many styles from Soul right the way through Metal, taking some of the best elements of each to create something that's heavy and melodic in equal measures. When a friend of mine posted their video for Mawu on Facebook, I knew I had to get them on the show!
They're a female fronted 'Shoe-Grunge' band from Nottingham, no their singer isn't called Madeline. She's actually called Lucy and she joined me along with guitarists Aly and Gez, drummer Martin and guest cello player Clara. The band's influences fall heavily on the grunge style, a lot of the guitar parts especially wouldn't sound out of place on an Alice in Chains record.
6 Things You Should Know:
We're off over to Continental Europe for this episode. More specifically to Denmark to talk to Maja Shining of Danish melodic hard rock band 'Forever Still'. Having grown up listening to heavier rock and metal music, this was something of a step back into my comfort zone, to an area of music I have far more in depth knowledge of than say folk music for example. With really well crafted songs and excellent production values I feel that Forever Still have a really great sound that could launch them into a successful career within the rock scene. Their music is heavy enough to appease the rock crowd but has enough catchy melodic content to make the transition into the mainstream like bands like Evanescence if they get the chance.
This episode features Maja singing 'The Last Day' accompanied only by a piano, if you want to hear the full band version of this song, check out the video below!
